Pretty interesting piece in today’s WSJ by Riva Richmond about successful and unsuccessful Facebook applications. At this point, Zuckerberg and Facebook are the kingpins of the campus entrepreneur space. While Gates, Brin, Dell, Smith, and others have far more money and reach, Zuck/Fbook are as hot as a pistol.
Its amazing how many other businesses have [...]

(Campus) Entrepreneurship: The Next Frontier?
June 2nd, 2008 · No Comments · Campus Eco-System, General Thoughts
Early this semester (way back in January) I met with Zoltan Acs to lay out a directed reading (independent study) in Entrepreneurship that I am completing. Zoltan recommended that I look at Frederick Jackson Turner’s Frontier Thesis on the US and see if it might fit with my research on Campus Entrepreneurship
Looks like we are [...]

Artistic Entrepreneurs on Campus
May 22nd, 2008 · No Comments · Entrepreneur Profiles, General Thoughts, Students
A group of campus entrepreneurs that we don’t talk about very frequently are those whose product or services comes from the sector we traditionally call arts and culture. Much of my work with Richard Florida analyzes the intersection of artistic talent/institutions and sustainable economic growth.
Campuses have long been a place where artistic endeavors flourish and [...]

Tech Entrepreneurship Not for the Young?
May 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Campus Eco-System, General Thoughts
Ben Worthen of the WSJ offers an interesting post on tech entrepreneurship, age, and education. Worthen reports on a recent Kauffman Foundation survey that finds, contrary to popular views, most enginnering & tech firms are founded by older workers. (the report is titled Education & Tech Entrepreneurship). From the post:
Instead, the average tech entrepreneur was [...]

WSJ Quietly Drops Entrepreneurs; Still Provides Stories
May 1st, 2008 · No Comments · General Thoughts
Today’s WSJ has an interesting article about a small business/entrepreneur in trouble. It turns out the story by Simona Covel is worth reading as it highlights how an entrepreneur made it through some tough times by radically shifting his core products.
As noteworthy as the article and the insights it provides are, the section that it [...]

In Beer Wars, Miller Gets Entrepreneurial On Bud
April 24th, 2008 · No Comments · Entrepreneur Profiles, General Thoughts
If you spend any time reading about or studying management, entrepreneurship, or business strategy, you will likely come across the term ‘corporate entrepreneurship.’ While I generally dismiss the term and don’t read much about it, today’s WSJ has an interesting piece on the perpetual beer wars between Budweiser and Miller (think India v. Pakistan) in [...]

Global University Expansion & the Growth of Edu Hot Spots
April 20th, 2008 · No Comments · General Thoughts
GlobalHigherEd has a pretty interesting post on the growth of ‘education cities’ or ‘hotspots’ where multiple global educational institutions and corporations co-locate. The blogs describes this trend:
new globalizing knowledge spaces, especially when multiple institutions (and often firms) from different countries are brought together within one space. These may take the form of a branch/overseas/foreign campus, [...]
